The General Consensus.....
1st Editions: Colors of the Mountain
by Da Chen
Da Chen's memoir was a fascinating and thought-provoking journey through his young life and our group rated the book with 4 stars.
Our readers discussed Mao Tse-tung's reign and the difference between the Chinese and the American cultures. On one hand, Da's family experiences are heart-wrenching, on the other hand, they are so heart-warming. Family is a key word in the above sentence.
This book is suggested reading for anyone who wants to learn timely history of China through the wide eyes of one of China's little boys as he becomes a wizened man.
1st Editions: The Hiding Place
by Corrie Ten Boom
1/2
An incredibly moving book; wonderfully written. Set in Holland as World War II was heating up, this is the true story of a Dutch watchmaker and his family. It was a heartwarming book when considering the family closeness, but a heart-wrenching book when considering the evils of that period of history.
Corrie and her sister are sent to a concentration camp. If the reader does not understand the story behind such places, this book will certainly educate them. The family is torn apart yet they can give to others, stay upbeat, and remain grounded by their unshakable religious faith. You will find yourself asking, how big can one's heart be?
The more our group reads on this subject, the more we ask how could this have happened?

1st Editions: The Mercy of Thin Air
by Ronlyn Dominque
This was a very confusing story with too many characters. It was very easy to lose the story line because the story jumps from the 1920s and back to the 1990s seemingly from page to page.
Choosing a creative story line for two combined love stories, the author fails, in our opinion, to deliver a well-written book. This made it extremely difficult to find a particular voice to follow.
Go ahead and try reading it, maybe you can get it!
The 1st Editions: The Road
by Cormac McCarthy
1/2
This story about the world after ruination follows a father and son across the country. The author never identifies the cause of the end of civilization. Was it global warming? Was it the Apocalypse? The reader is left to his thoughts on the cause.
Even though the premise is troubling, the bond between the father and his young son is heartwarming. The world of survival is severe. It is everyone for himself. The trials and tribulations the pair experience are things that we would probably be going through when and if the world as we know it comes to an end.
A well-written book on a thought-provoking subject.
